Ken is a retired Conservation Officer who enjoys creating useful items from salvaged wood. Eighteen years of lathe-turning has given Ken the experience to identify trees with strength and character, see the finished piece within the log and, keeping the final designs simple and practical, letting the beauty of the wood speak for itself.
He works with a variety of trees from southern Vancouver Island, but focuses mainly on Maple and Arbutus for their character and their popularity with customers. His specialty is salad bowls and servers but he also produces a variety of other lathe-turned and hand-crafted objects such as cutting boards, kitchen utensils, smaller bowls, serving platters, lidded containers, coasters, and artistic pieces.
The bowl-making process starts with the treasure hunt for wood, continues with chain sawing the logs into appropriate-sized sections, rough-turning them on the lathe, storing and drying them, then final-turning, sanding and finishing them. Much of the creative process happens in Ken’s dusty workshop, with completed products being displayed in the delightful post-and-beam studio which Ken built and which stands beside his log home just west of Duncan.
