Venturi-Schulze is uniquely artisanal. Family owned and operated by Giordano and Marilyn Venturi and daughter Michelle Schulze, it is not just a business, but the fulfillment of a shared dream. Giordano was born and raised in Modena, Italy and started making ancient method balsamic vinegar in Canada in 1970. In 1987, he and Marilyn (a microbiologist born in Queensland, Australia) bought a pristine forested property in the Cowichan Valley and set about creating a natural, sustainable vineyard to produce perfect grapes to supply their winery and vinegary without using herbicides, pesticides or irrigation. Their wines are now renowned and served in some of the finest restaurants from Vancouver Island to Montreal and Washington and Oregon. Their balsamic vinegar is described by such luminaries as Adrienne Clarkson, former Governor General of Canada, as the best in the world. Always passionate about food and wine, they now produce a line of culinary products including verjus and grape jellies, all exclusively from their own grapes. Since timing is everything when growing grapes without the arsenal of chemicals normally used, the Venturi-Schulze family may close when all hands are needed in the vineyard, so call ahead before visiting to be sure.
